Define Leadership or What is Leadership

Leadership is an art of motivation the actions of others.

 

According to Peter Drucker “Leadership is setting a clear direction and take responsibility for decisions”

 

In a simple word, leadership is the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group towards the achievement of a set of goals or task in a given time period.  There are multiple definitions given by eminent social scientists time to time, but if we consolidated all the definitions we can derive fundamental functions of a leader

a.    Leader should be internally motivated

b.    Leader takes decision

c.    Leader gives coaching & provide mentorship

d.   Leaders are always confident

e.    Leaders should have influencing power

f.     Leaders always thing out of the box

g.   Leaders always find out innovative & alternative ways

h.   Leaders desire results

We can see leaders in every where even in our society or in corporate. If we peep into insight of the leaders we will find some common characteristics among all the leaders as defined above

Question No 2:

Define various Leadership Style

In the organizational context there are FIVE types of leadership style that we can see

@  Democratic Leadership Style

@  Autocratic Leadership Style

@  Laissez – Faire Leadership Style

@  Transformational Leadership Style

@  Transactional Leadership Style

Democratic Leadership Style

@  In this type of leadership style leader takes all decision based on inputs given by each team members

@  The leader takes decisions at his own level, but he involves all employees in the decision making process

@  It is called most effective leadership style because in involves lower level staff to senior level staff in decision making process

@  Under this leadership style everyone get equal opportunity and voting right to share their views and opinion in decision making process

 

Autocratic Leadership Style

@  This is just opposite or inverse of democratic leadership

@  Leader makes decision without taking input from anyone who reports to him

@  Employees are neither considered nor consulted prior to taking any decision

@  Employees are responsible to follow the direction or order

@  Employee has no right to ask any question or disobeying the order

Laissez – Faire Leadership Style

@  The French term “ Laisser – Faire” literally translates to “ Let Them Do” and leaders who embrace it pass on  authority to their employees

@  Believe on employee empowerment by trusting them to work

@  It can open their self development opportunities and overlook companies growth opportunities ( common in europium and American work culture)

@  Very less monitoring and checking

@  In Indian context Start Up Companies believe on Laissez – Faire leadership style

Transformational Leadership Style

@  In this leadership style , employees might have to start basic set of task and goals that they complete every week or month

@  The role of the leader is to constantly push employees outside of their comfort zone

@  When starting a job with this type of leader, all employees might get a list of goals to reach as well as deadline for achieving them

@  While the goal might seem simple at first , you manager you will assign more challenging goals in future as you grow with the company

@  This type of leadership is common of every fast growing organizations where organization is in a transformational mood  

Transactional Leadership Style

@  Managers reward employees for precisely the work they do

@  Transactional leadership helps to establish certain defined roles & responsibilities for each  employees and ensure standard outputs

@  Give full freedom and autonomy to employees, only intervene when standard not achieved

@  Discuss with the employee and identify the cause of short target achievement and help him out

Define some Good Quality of a Leader

Social Scientists have defined quality of a leader in various ways and the traits are:

@  Sensible

@  Good Attitude & Behaviour
